Valeria Joy "Val" Derichsweiler, 83, of McAlester, passed away Sunday, June 27, 2021, in Tulsa.
The family will welcome friends for viewing and visitation on Wednesday, June 30, at Brumley-Mills Funeral Home from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Funeral services will be Thursday, July 1, at 2:00 p.m. at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Krebs, with Father Kingsley George-Obilonu officiating. Burial will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Pallbearers are Will Derichsweiler, Jake Derichsweiler, Jeremy Tolman, and Colton Ross.
Val Derichsweiler was born on March 12, 1938 in McAlester to Andrew White and Lucy (Smith) White-Martin. She grew up here and graduated from McAlester High School. She married Bill Derichsweiler on Dec. 29, 1954. He preceded her in death on May 22, 2019.
As a young adult, Val worked at the Pittsburg County Courthouse a few years, then, when Bill started his State Farm Insurance agency, she worked there to help get the business going. Some years later she opened and operated the Springcrest Custom Draperies for 10 years, until retiring. Val was a long-time member of the Catholic Church, and had attended both St. Joseph's in Krebs and St. John's in McAlester. She was also civic-minded, volunteering with the Catholic Charities and Meals on Wheels, and was a member of the McAlester Fortnightly Club and the Red Hat Club.
Val is survived by her children, Lisa D. Gray of McAlester, and Mark and Janet Derichsweiler of McAlester; grandchildren, Kyleigh Tolman and husband Jeremy, Keaton Ross and husband Colton, Sara Derichsweiler Coe and husband Clint, William M. Derichsweiler and fiancé Sadie Jones, and Jake Derichsweiler; and great grandchildren, Charleigh Tolman and Crew, Cora, and Rosie Coe. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Bill; a brother, James White; and a sister, Florence McManes.
