Oscar David Martin, 89, of McAlester, passed away Friday, May 3, 2024 at his home, with his family at his side.  Funeral services are set for Monday, May 6, at 2:00 p.m. at Brumley-Mills Funeral Home Chapel, with Dr. Craig Shaw, a son-in-law, officiating.  Burial will follow at Tannehill Cemetery.  Pallbearers will be Alan Martin, Blake Martin, Jacob Martin, Joe Martin, Conner Shaw, Landon Harmon, Luke Martin, Easton Martin and Jeremiah Young.

Oscar Martin was born on April 1, 1935 in McAlester to Robert Lawrence Martin and Ivia Ona (Dixon) Martin.  Oscar grew up in the Tannehill and Scipio area, attended Tannehill school through the eighth grade, then graduated from Indianola High School.  He married Betty (Hendrix) Martin on August 20, 1954.  They made their home in McAlester, except for a few years in Oklahoma City where Oscar worked for Michelin Tires.  While living in McAlester, Oscar worked as a correctional officer at the state prison for almost 30 years, retiring in 1991.  Oscar was one of the officers that was taken hostage by inmates during the prison riot in July of 1973.  Not one to sit around, Oscar also mowed yards and worked on houses in the area and could fix about anything.  He even built his own house, with a little help from his kids.  He was a member of the First Free Will Baptist Church of McAlester.

Oscar is survived by his wife, Betty Martin; his children, Donna Young and James, David Martin and Laurie, Denise Shaw and Craig, Darrell Martin, and Debbie McIntosh; grandchildren, Tiffany Hill and Gina, Alan Martin and Kandi, Renae Shields and Carter, Joe Martin, Jessica Martin, Ashley Young, Jimmy Young, Shastidy Young, Abby Martin, Luke Martin, Tara Shaw, and Conner Shaw; 13 great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Mike McIntosh, and all 7 of his siblings.
