Obituary

Larry Dale Owens, 74, of McAlester, passed away peacefully at his home on Sunday, October 27, 2024.  Funeral services will be Wednesday, October 30 at 10:00 a.m. at Brumley-Mills Funeral Home with Rev. D. Scott Vandenheuvel.  Honorary pallbearers are John Barnett, John Shackleford, Jerry Shackleford, Brian Shackleford, Aaron Boatright, Taylor Brumley, Lester Wray, Jordan Austin, Charlie Gilbertson, Millard Henry III, the McAlester Fire Department, and all other members of the MHS class of 1969, which includes the 1968 state championship football team.

Larry Owens was born on May 8, 1950 in McAlester to Delbert and Margie (Sykes) Owens.  He grew up in McAlester and graduated from McAlester High School in 1969, where he participated in football and was part of the 1968 State Championship team.  After high school, Larry attended UCO where he received his Associate Degree.  He soon went to work as a firefighter for the McAlester Fire Department for many years until his retirement. Larry loved the outdoors, whether it was sitting in a tree stand waiting for that next white tail buck, or sitting in his Champion boat trying to catch a big bass.  Larry was arguably the best around, at both, in his day and won many bass tournaments on Lake Eufaula and Grand Lake.  He absolutely loved spending time on the lake going fast in his boat or at the deer cabin with his friends.

Larry is survived by his wife, Ann Owens; three sons and daughters-in-law, Ryan and Reina Owens, Brent and Tamara Owens, and Eric and Tracy Owens; his grandchildren, Zane and Cruz Owens, Aidan Owens, Larry Brent Owens, Tanna Parker, Alexandra Owens and Ilissa Padgent; his great grandchildren, Rylan Parker and Logan Parker; 2 aunts and an uncle, Janie Williamson, Betty Sykes, and Kenneth Sykes.  He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Terry Owens; and two sisters, Debbie Compton and Deanna Wiley.
