Karen Gail "Pope" YellsEagle, beloved mother, grandmother, retired nurse, and member of the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma, passed away Sunday March 1, 2026 in Talihina, Ok surrounded by her family.
She was born May 13, 1951 in Talihina, Ok. A resident of Hartshorne, Karen devoted her life to caring for others and nurturing the people she loved most. Karen graduated from Hartshorne High School and went on to pursue her calling in healthcare. She earned her Registered Nursing degree from Eastern Oklahoma State College. As a nurse, she embodied compassion, strength, and quiet resilience, touching countless lives through her skill and kindness. Outside of her profession, Karen found joy in life's simple pleasures. She loved collecting her cherished knick-knacks and could often be found exploring yard sales in search of hidden treasures. She had an eye for beauty in small things, a quality that reflected her generous heart. Karen was especially gifted in quilting. She lovingly created numerous handmade quilts over the years, each one stitched with patience, care, and deep affection. Those quilts now serve as treasured keepsakes and tangible reminders of her warmth and creativity. Above all, Karen's greatest joy was her family. She loved her children, grandchildren, and extended family wholeheartedly. Karen leaves behind a legacy of compassion, creativity, service, and family devotion. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who were blessed to know her.
Karen is survived by her Sons Stacy "Chick" YellsEagle and Karen Bias and Kyle YellsEagle and both of McAlester, ok; Daughter Rachel YellsEagle of Hartshorne, Ok. Five grandchildren, Rebecca, Chrysta, Norris Parker of Choctaw, Ok and Cassie and Waylon Pink of Hartshorne, Ok Brother John and Reba Pope Jr of McAlester. Sisters Edwinna Gehring of McAlester, OK, Barbara and Jim Lann of Cushing, Ok, Lora "Boo" Dunafan and Lindsy "Jo" Pope Moody of Hartshorne, Ok. Numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Proceeded in death by her son Elijah YellsEagle, Parents John and Virgie "Sally" Pope Sr, Brothers Frank and Howard Pope, Brother-n-law's C.A. Dunafan and Gary Gehring Sr. Nephews Gary Gehring Jr, LaMarcus Morris, Alex Davidson Jr. Grandparents David and Lindsy "Cann" Robertson, and Frank and Dora "Jefferson" Pope.
Pallbearers: Chris "Bubba" Dunafan, Chris Lann, Garrison Goslin, Harold Meashintubby Jr, Harold "Boog" Meashintubby III, Noah Meashintubby. Honorary Pallbearers: All of Karen's nephews and cousins. Visitation Tuesday March 3, 2026 5-7pm Brumley-Mills Funeral Home in Hartshorne Funeral: Wednesday March 4, 2026 at 2:00 pm Brumley-Mills Funeral Home in Hartshorne. Final resting place will be at Elmwood Cemetery in Hartshorne, Ok Officiated by Lacey Arreola.
