Helen Frances Bangs, 94, of McAlester, passed away on Thursday, May 13, 2021 at Walnut Grove Living Center.

Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Monday, May 17th at Brumley-Mills Funeral Home Chapel in McAlester.  Burial will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery in McAlester.

Helen was born on January 9, 1927 in McAlester, Oklahoma to Leonard and Violet (Jordan) Bangs.  She was a lifelong resident of McAlester, moving back from Ponca City where she was a teacher to care for her father and brother, respectively.  She received her Master's Degree in Education from Columbia University and taught middle school English.  She was a member of the Grand Avenue United Methodist Church, now the First United Methodist Church.  She was a Red Cross Volunteer and enjoyed bird watching and gardening.  She was a member of the Retired Teachers Association, Republican Women's Association and the Methodist Women's Circle.

Survivors include a sister, Jo (Bangs) Lewis of Seattle, WA; nieces, Pamela Mills of Oklahoma City, OK and Amy Soleymani of Seattle, WA; nephews, Paul Chitwood of Santa Fe, NM, Steve Chitwood of Southlake, TX and Keith Bangs of Irvine, CA.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Leonard and Violet Bangs; brother, Robert Leonard Bangs; sister, Virginia Lee Chitwood and niece, Beth Chitwood.
