George Albert Bishop, 80, of Hartshorne, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 7, at his home. Viewing will be Friday, Oct. 9, from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Brumley-Mills Funeral Home in Hartshorne. Funeral services are Saturday, Oct. 10, at 10:00 a.m. at Brumley-Mills Funeral Home in Hartshorne with Pastor Clint Pope officiating. Military honors will be provided by the U. S. Army Honor Guard.
George Bishop was born on May 11, 1946 in Kansas City, MO, to George and Helen (Vermillion) Bishop. After completing high school, he joined the U. S. Army and served for 3 years, receiving his honorable discharge in 1966. George worked as a substance abuse counselor in Minnesota, Kansas, and in McAlester at the Oaks Rehabilitation Center. He continued that work for another 18 years at Jones Academy. He also was a police officer and trained and handled drug dogs. George was a member of the Hartshorne American Legion and was a former Legion Commander. Though he claimed he was neither an artist nor musician, he crafted flutes out of river cane, cedar, and even peach wood and was quite generous with gifting them. For example, many of the years during his time at Jones Academy, each graduating student was gifted a river cane flute. He and his family believe there is one of his flutes in every state of the country, as well as other countries.
George is survived by his wife, Jane Bishop; his children, Shawn Bishop, Dawn Bishop, Joshua Bishop, and Jason Bishop; 8 grandchildren; numerous great grandchildren, and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, 4 brothers, Jim, Bob, Everett Wayne, and Tony Bishop, and 2 sisters, Cordie Lee Ford and Melinda Bishop.
