She made her own clothing, quilts, blankets as well as making them for others and to sell. Dorthy enjoyed the time she spent with her church attending Sunday worship, revivals, and camp meeting. She often traveled with her church on trips to Gospel of the Kingdom Campground in Kentucky. Dorthy was a musician and played many instruments including guitar, tambourine, accordion, and harmonica. She played harmonica in the band at her church and would play with other musicians between camp meeting services. Dorthy loved her God and her church. Known to her church as, Sister Johnson, she would encourage those around her to get into church or to attend hers. She would say, "get a bulldog hold on God, and hold on".
